If you've spotted tallow on the ingredient list of one of our products and wondered, Wait... what exactly is tallow? — you're definitely not alone.

Tallow is a traditional ingredient made by slowly rendering beef fat until the pure fat is separated from everything else. It has been used for generations in soap making, cooking and skin care, and today it's making a well-deserved comeback in handcrafted body care.

At Irogami Essentials, we take that traditional ingredient one step further: we source our beef fat locally and render it ourselves.

From Local Beef Fat to Ultra-Clean Tallow

Our tallow doesn't arrive at the studio already processed and ready to scoop into a recipe.

We start with locally sourced beef fat and render it ourselves in small batches. Rendering gently melts the fat and allows us to separate and remove the remaining tissue, moisture and impurities.

And we don't stop after one pass.

We clean and render our tallow repeatedly until we're happy with the finished product — a smooth, creamy, ultra-clean tallow ready to become part of our handmade soaps and skin care.

It's a longer process, but it gives us control over an ingredient that's become an important part of what we make.

Why Tallow for Skin Care?

Here's where tallow gets really interesting.

Tallow is naturally rich in fatty acids, including oleic, stearic and palmitic acids — lipids that work beautifully in rich, nourishing skin-care formulas.

Because it's an oil-based ingredient, tallow helps soften the skin and reduce moisture loss by supporting the skin's protective barrier. That's one reason it works especially well in products designed for dry, rough or weather-exposed skin.

And Wisconsin winters?

Yeah. Our skin knows a thing or two about those. 😂

Tallow also gives products a wonderfully rich texture without requiring a mile-long ingredient list.

How We Use Tallow at Irogami Essentials

Tallow isn't just one product around here. It's become one of our favorite ingredients to work with.

You'll find it in several Irogami Essentials creations, including:

Whipped Tallow
Our rich, fluffy moisturizer made primarily with rendered tallow and skin-loving oils such as jojoba. We create different varieties and infusions, including some made with locally sourced ingredients.

Handcrafted Cold Process Soap
Tallow makes a beautiful bar of soap. It contributes hardness and longevity to the bar while producing a creamy, conditioning lather.

Specialty Skin-Care Products
We also use tallow as the foundation for lip balms, beard balms, creams and other formulations when we want a rich, protective product for dry skin.

Why Not Just Buy Tallow?

We could.

It would certainly be easier.

But sourcing locally and rendering our own allows us to know where this important ingredient comes from and control how it's prepared before it ever goes into one of our products.

It also fits something we care deeply about at Irogami Essentials: using simple ingredients thoughtfully and making as much as we reasonably can ourselves.

There's something pretty amazing about taking an ingredient that might otherwise be overlooked and carefully transforming it into something useful, beautiful and nourishing.

Old-Fashioned Ingredient. Modern Skin Care.

Tallow isn't a new skin-care trend.

It's actually quite the opposite.

It's a traditional ingredient that's finding its way back into modern routines because sometimes the simplest ingredients really do deserve another look.

For us, tallow checks a lot of boxes: it's versatile, wonderfully rich, locally sourceable and makes some seriously lovely handmade products.

And when you pick up one of our tallow products, you're not just getting something that came from a bulk container labeled "tallow."

You're getting an ingredient that started locally, was rendered and cleaned by us, and was handcrafted into your finished product right here in our Wisconsin studio.

That's a little more work on our end.

But that's kind of the point.

Handmade should actually mean handmade.
