Tallow Butter with Magnesium: Why We Combine These Skin-Loving Ingredients

Some products start with a recipe.

Others start with a question:

How many wonderful ingredients can we bring together in one rich, luxurious nighttime body butter?

Our Tallow Butter with Magnesium & Chamomile is one of those creations.

It combines our own hand-rendered tallow with jojoba oil, magnesium oil and carefully selected supporting ingredients to create a creamy, deeply moisturizing butter that's especially lovely as part of an evening self-care routine.

But what does each ingredient actually do?

Let's peek inside the jar.

It Starts With Our Hand-Rendered Tallow

Tallow is at the heart of this formula.

We locally source our beef fat and render it ourselves, carefully cleaning it through our process until we're left with the smooth, ultra-clean tallow we use throughout many Irogami Essentials products.

Tallow contains naturally occurring fatty acids including oleic, stearic and palmitic acids.

In skin care, these rich lipids make tallow a wonderful emollient. It helps soften and condition dry skin while creating a protective layer that helps reduce moisture loss.

The result?

That wonderfully rich, nourished feeling that makes tallow especially nice for hands, feet, elbows, legs and other areas that tend to get dry.

And living in Wisconsin, we know a thing or two about dry skin.

Why We Pair Tallow with Jojoba Oil

Next comes one of our favorite skin-care ingredients: jojoba oil.

Technically, jojoba isn't actually an oil at all. It's a liquid wax ester.

Its unique composition makes it lightweight, stable and beautifully compatible with skin-care formulations. It helps soften and condition the skin without giving our finished butter an unnecessarily heavy or greasy feel.

Pairing jojoba with rich tallow gives us a balance we love:

Tallow provides richness and protection. Jojoba adds softness and beautiful glide.

Together, they're quite the little skin-care power couple.

Then We Make Our Magnesium Oil

Despite its name, magnesium oil isn't actually an oil.

We make ours using magnesium chloride flakes and distilled water, creating a concentrated magnesium solution that has the characteristic silky, almost oil-like feel that gave magnesium oil its name.

We then incorporate that magnesium oil into our tallow butter formulation.

Magnesium body products have become popular additions to nighttime wellness routines, particularly for massage and winding down at the end of a long day.

We especially love applying this butter to feet, calves, legs, shoulders and other hardworking areas before bed.

Consider it permission to sit down for five minutes and stop doing things.

We're looking at you, fellow Gen Xers. 😂

A Touch of Calming Chamomile

We also add Roman chamomile essential oil, known for its soft, herbaceous aroma and long history of use in calming, relaxing routines.

Its gentle scent complements the magnesium beautifully, making this butter especially lovely for an evening wind-down ritual. Massage it into feet, calves, shoulders or other hardworking areas, breathe in that subtle chamomile aroma, and give yourself a little signal that the day is officially winding down.

Chamomile essential oil also brings skin-soothing and conditioning qualities to the formula, making it a natural fit alongside our rich tallow and jojoba oil.

Tallow + jojoba + magnesium + chamomile = basically our “okay body, we're done for today” jar. 😂🌙

What Is Aspen Bark Extract Doing in There?

Our formula also includes aspen bark extract, a botanical ingredient derived from the bark of the aspen tree.

Aspen bark naturally contains compounds that have made the extract useful in cosmetic formulations for its skin-conditioning and antimicrobial properties.

We incorporate it as a functional part of the formula and its preservation strategy while also appreciating its botanical origin.

It's a perfect example of an ingredient that isn't there simply because it sounds pretty on a label.

It has a job to do.

Bringing Oil and Water Together

Here's where making this butter gets interesting.

Tallow and jojoba are oil-based.

Our magnesium solution is water-based.

And—as you probably learned the first time you shook up a bottle of salad dressing—oil and water aren't exactly interested in becoming best friends.

That's why this isn't simply melted tallow with magnesium stirred into it.

The different phases of our formula are prepared separately and carefully brought together using an emulsifier at the proper stage and temperature. Timing, temperature and thorough blending matter to create the smooth, creamy emulsion we're looking for.

Once everything comes together, that mixture transforms into the rich butter-lotion texture you find inside the jar.

It's one of our favorite parts of making it.

A handful of very different ingredients suddenly become one silky finished product.

Why We Love It at Night

Technically, you can reach for your Tallow Butter whenever your skin needs some extra love.

But nighttime is where we think this product really shines.

Massage a small amount into your feet, calves, hands or other dry areas before bed. The tallow and jojoba leave skin feeling moisturized and conditioned, while the magnesium component makes it a lovely addition to an evening wind-down or massage routine.

And because this is a rich formula, a little goes a long way.

No complicated 14-step nighttime ritual required.

Apply.

Massage.

Put on the comfy pants.

You're officially off duty.

Simple Ingredients. Thoughtful Formulation.

One of our favorite things about handcrafting our products is understanding why each ingredient is there.

Our Tallow Butter with Magnesium brings together:

Locally sourced, hand-rendered tallow for rich emollient moisture and protection.

Jojoba oil for conditioning, softness and glide.

Our magnesium oil, made with magnesium chloride flakes and distilled water, for a wonderful addition to nighttime massage and self-care.

Aspen bark extract for its skin-conditioning and antimicrobial properties and its functional role within the formulation.

Chamomile Essential Oils, to further calm your body, mind and soul.

And the supporting ingredients needed to bring everything together into one smooth, stable butter-lotion.

It's not about cramming trendy ingredients into a jar.

It's about choosing ingredients that each bring something useful to the finished product—and carefully formulating them so they work beautifully together.

Because around here, we don't just want to know what is in the jar.

We want to know why it's there.
